Board of Directors elected for 2016-2017

Cindy Newman - President

Lisa George - First Vice President

This is my fifth year as a Pointers Run parent and my third year serving on the PTA. I have two children at PRES this year; Matthew is in fifth grade and Millie is in second. I grew up in Howard County public schools and am thrilled that my children will have the same experience. In addition to being a mom and volunteering in the classroom, I am a pediatric occupational therapist. I co-own a private practice serving primarily preschool and elementary school-aged children in Northwest, DC. My husband is the den leader for the fifth grade boys in Pack 702. We both feel strongly about volunteering our time to model for our children how important it is to give back to the community. My free time is pretty scarce and mostly dedicated to spending time with friends and family. I am looking forward to the 2016-17 school year and meeting more people in our community through this role.

Misty Avila - Second Vice President

IMG 0097
This is our second year at Pointers Run, and my first year serving on the PTA. Brandon is in 3rd grade, and Skylar is in 1st grade. We moved here from Austin, TX in the summer of 2015, and quickly fell in love with Maryland! We moved to Columbia because my husband took a new role as a marketing executive with a local company. My background includes working as a nurse in the intensive care unit, as well as sales/marketing. Right now, I am enjoying being able to spend so much time volunteering, and I look forward to an amazing year with the PRES PTA.

Sheila McMahon - Third Vice President

Laura Martin - Treasurer

PRES PTA bio    This is my fourth year as a Pointers Run parent and my first serving on the PTA.  I have one son, Braeden, who is entering 3rd grade.  We have been in Maryland for seven years now.  My husband, Jason, and I met while living in Colorado, however, we are both from Kansas City, Missouri where most of our family still resides.  I work full time outside the home and have over 20 years Finance experience.  In my free time, I enjoy traveling, visiting family & friends and watching my son play baseball.  I am looking forward to a fun year with PRES PTA and am excited to be able to contribute to and be involved in my son's education!

Jennifer Austin - Recording Secretary

This is my fourth year as a Pointer's Run parent, and my second year serving as recording secretary for the PTA. My son, Christopher, is in the third grade this year. When I'm not outdoors on a kayak or a hiking trail somewhere with him, I work for an educational non-profit foundation. Our mission is to develop and disseminate research-based programs to help the most disadvantaged children be successful in school. I also lead a team of small group teachers in the children's department at a church in Fulton. Christopher and I look forward to another great year at PRES!

Jill Hartman - Corresponding Secretary

This is my first year as a Pointers Run parent. We moved this summer from Timonium, MD. I have two children at PRES this year; Sydney will be in Kindergarten and Trevor will be in third grade. My oldest will be attending Clarksville MS. I am very excited to meet everyone. In addition to the PTA, I am a pediatric physical therapist. I love to run, bake, read (when I can) and spend time with my family. I am looking forward to a great year.

Jessica Sokira - Delegate #1

This is my fifth year as a Pointers Run parent and fifth is service to our PTA. I have two students at Pointers that benefit from the active PTA involvement with the school. My PTA service has always been as delegate to the PTA Council of Howard County. In that role I serve as liaison between our local school PTA and the County PTA. I learn what is going on at the county level which is where policy, budget and curriculum change occurs. I advise our local PTA of county matters and ask for what our school’s stance is so that our voice can be represented on the county level. I can also relay local matters from our school that are within county jurisdiction to be addressed at the county level. Please attend our monthly school PTA meetings to learn and share what is going on with your children’s academic experience. Working together is how we can influence the experience our children have with education.

Danelle Buchman - Delegate # 2

This is my family’s third year at PRES and my second serving on the PTA.  I enjoy connecting with other parents and volunteering at the school.  Community service is important to me, so in addition to being a mom to two PRES students (1st and 2nd grade) , I serve as a community volunteer with the Women’s Giving Circle of Howard County and the Maryland Legislative Agenda for Women.  I also work as the Senior Community Health Director for the American Heart Association.  As a family we enjoy going on little local adventures, trying new restaurants, and visiting with family and friends.  I love to read and despite two left feet, I try to fit in a gym class now and then.

Please congratulate and thank these awesome volunteers for stepping up to lead the PRES PTA in our mission to bring valuable programs that enrich our school community.
